Mt. Baldy

51 miles 6500 ft of gain

From San Dimas Avenue you can get 7 mile warm-up before heading up Mt
Baldy Rd.   THIS IS A MUST DO CLIMB.  It starts off fairly easy and lulls you
until it pitches up.  There are sections that avg 9% and more for miles at a
time.  The last couple of miles are well over 10-15% with really tight
switchbacks.  You have to swing wide because if you take the inside line you
will suffer.   It is a very fast descent with switchbacks at the top and then
wide no brake turns.

As you come down Baldy make a right turn onto Glendora Mountain Ridge
Road.  This  puts you on a ridge road with fantastic views and solitude.  As
you look down into the valley you can see the blacktop ribbon that is the
road you ascended.  It is rides like this that make climbing worth it and
reassures you that "yeah I love to ride my bike, where else would I rather
be?"

Mt Baldy and Alp d'Huez Comparison

Encanto Park, GMR and then Mt Baldy to the ski lifts 49 miles one way

The Mount Baldy climb is one of the most difficult in the LA Area with 4600 feet of
climbing in 13 miles.  The last five miles are extremely steep with an average of over
8% and some 15% sections. Start: Mills Road and Mt. Baldy Rd. in Claremont.

This climb can be described in two sections - like Palomar Mountain. The first
section is eight miles to the intersection with Glendora Mountain Road with a 6%
average. The harder part starts here with 4.6 miles of climbing at an average of
8.6%. The road surface on the top part is very poor with very tight switchbacks.

Total Climb  12.63 mi.  4615' ascent  7%
Part 1              8.0 mi.  2505' ascent  6%
Part 2            4.63 mi.  2110' ascent  8.6%

Alpe d'Huez Comparison: If you start at mile 3.83 (near the intersection with
Mountain Ave at the top of the reservoir), the climb is 8.8 miles with an average
grade of 7.6%. Alpe d'huez is 8.8 miles with a 7.9% average.

This is about the closest thing in Southern California that you can compare in length
and steepness to Alpe d'Huez. However, if you start at mile 5 near the first tunnel,
the climb is 7.6 miles with an 8.2% average. The last few miles of this climb are
more dificult than most of Alpe d'huez.
