Coach George Vargas, a former United States Marine Corps Drill Instructor, is an Ultra Distance Cyclist. He has been awarded the California Triple Crown Thousand Mile Club which requires him to complete FIVE Double Centuries in one calendar year. He is also a Super Randonneur which requires him to complete a series of Brevets 200km (125 miles), 300km (187 miles), 400km (250 miles) and 600km (375 miles) unsupported, non stop events all in one season. In 2006, he completed the Furnace Creek 508 Solo, "The toughest 48 hours in sport". A 508 mile non-stop event, combining 35,000 feet of climbing, desert heat, calorie deficit, and sleep deprivation. In 2007, he competed in RAAM Race Across America a 3,000 mile Coast to Coast non-stop bicycle race as a part of a two person team. And Coach George returned to the Furnace Creek 508 and completed the event on a Fixed Gear bicycle. One of only seven riders to do that since 1983. Eventually, he will race Solo RAAM.. His passion is the bike and he has a way of imparting that passion on all of those he trains. Click HERE for race results. Click HERE for Double Century Report |
| In 2006 Coach George set a goal of climbing more than 600,000 feet. A 6 for 6 thing. 2005 was 5 for 5. Well he achieved that and more with 650,000 feet of climbing riding just shy of 10,000 miles and over 700 hours on the bike. 2005- 500,000 feet in 2005! And over 9000 miles - that's like 3 times across the country. He clocked close to 700 hours - almost a solid month on the bike!!! With all that riding he burned more than 400,000 calories. Way to go George. Click on the links above to see some amazing graphs |
