The Grand Tour was Coach George's first Ultra Event. After two years off the bike, Coach George decided to plan on an event to get him in to shape. He had heard about Double Centuries but thought they were for crazy people who wish to destroy their bodies for 12 plus hours. In June 2003 after eight weeks of riding his bike he shows up at the start line of the The Grand Tour Double Century. Heeding the advice of his friends, he leaves early in the dark of night hoping to be able to rest and recover if he bonks on the course. Sometime after sunrise he joins a couple of tandems and rode with them. The tandem riders talk him into doing the Highland Triple Century and Coach George's first Ultra Event ends up being a Triple Century. The Grand Tour holds a certain sentimental value for him and so he would like to do his first Quad in 24 hours at The Grand Tour. 2006 is the year he has in mind to do the Quad. In 2004, a late start (530am) heat (unseasonably) through the climbs, no tailwind (Southbound from Gaviota) back to Malibu kept him from doing the Quad in 24 hours. However, he did the Triple Century in under 21 hours (20:47). Results 2004 Results 2003 |
