Torrey Pines
71 miles with 7100 feet of climbing

Here is a way to get a lot of elevation gain and not get a lot of "junk miles".
Starting with a good 15 minutes of warm-up then proceed to do hill repeats on
Torrey Pines.  This is a short hill and there is plenty of opportunity to do a
different drill on each ascent.  For example, you could increase your wattage on
every climb up, increase your gear, do big ring climbs or ILT (Isolated Leg
Training).

Hill Workout #3                                        Rated A
Cole Grade and Palomar South Grade
43 Miles 5700 feet of climbing

Park your car at the famous store just East of the Hwy 76 and Valley Center Rd
intersection.  As a warm up before Mt Palomar, ride West on Hwy 76 and make
a left on Cole Grade Rd.  A great climb with some false summits and rolling
terrain.  Make a left on Valley Center Rd and head back towards your car.

Now that you are warmed up attack Palomar Mountain South Grade. U-turn at
the top and enjoy one of the fastest longest descents in San Diego county.
Speeds get up to 45 mph-a great reward for a good three hour workout.
Reference Epic Hill Climb Challenge for the fastest Palomar Mountain ascents.

Wango Tango on Mango

remember the Motor City Madman, Ted Nuggent.  Anyway Wango Tango was
one of his songs.

workout is four repeats on the outside of Torrey Pines.  Then you will head
North on the coast RIGHT on Carmel Valley Rd, LEFT on Portofino, LEFT on

Encinitas to Julian #6                                Rated B+
101 miles with 7700 feet of climbing

From beautiful Encinitas to the quaint little town of Julian.  There is plenty of
climbing as you leave Encinitas at approx 250 elevation and ascend to Julian at
4220 feet elevation.  Have lunch and apple pie and then it is basically "all
downhill from here".  How many times have you heard that before?

Major highlights of the ride are Del Dios Hwy, Highland Valley Road, Old
Julian Hwy, and the final seven mile relatively easy climb to Julian from Santa
Ysabel.
