


| Hill Workout #1 Rated B Soledad Mountain 55 miles ride with 5100 feet of climbing Start at Flower Hill Mall heading east on Via De la Valle, turn right on El Camino Real, left on San Dieguito Road, right Old El Camino, right on the Side Street which reconnects to El Camino, continue to Sorrento Valley, south Interstate 5, exit Genesee, left on Torrey Pines Road, down La Jolla Shores, up to Via Capri, down Soledad Mountain Road (SMR), repeat SMR, down Via Capri, up La Jolla Shores add another repeat on Torrey Pines Hill. |
| Hill Workout #2 Rated B+ Torrey Pines 71 miles with 7100 feet of climbing Here is a way to get a lot of elevation gain and not get a lot of "junk miles". Starting with a good 15 minutes of warm-up then proceed to do hill repeats on Torrey Pines. This is a short hill and there is plenty of opportunity to do a different drill on each ascent. For example, you could increase your wattage on every climb up, increase your gear, do big ring climbs or ILT (Isolated Leg Training). 15 Repeats on Torrey Pines |
| Hill Workout #3 Rated A Cole Grade and Palomar South Grade 43 Miles 5700 feet of climbing Park your car at the famous store just East of the Hwy 76 and Valley Center Rd intersection. As a warm up before Mt Palomar, ride West on Hwy 76 and make a left on Cole Grade Rd. A great climb with some false summits and rolling terrain. Make a left on Valley Center Rd and head back towards your car. Now that you are warmed up attack Palomar Mountain South Grade. U-turn at the top and enjoy one of the fastest longest descents in San Diego county. Speeds get up to 45 mph-a great reward for a good three hour workout. | Hill Workout #4 Rated C Quail Gardens Loop 15 miles with 1300 feet of Climbing Begin at El Camino Real and Encinitas Blvd. Head West on Encinitas Blvd crest the hill at Via Cantebria then descend and make a right turn on Quail Gardens heading North Crest the hill and make a Right on Leucadia Blvd Descend and make a right turn through the shopping center which puts you on Via Cantebria. Get ready for the first section which is steep as it intersects with Garden View. Then continue South towards Encinitas Blvd and make a right on Encinitas Blvd and repeat the loop again. | Hill Workout #5 Rated C Wango Tango on Mango 30 miles with 3200 feet of gain Some of you may be young enough or old enough, for that matter, to remember the Motor City Madman, Ted Nuggent. Anyway Wango Tango was one of his songs. This ride begins at the Torrey Pines State Reserves. The first part of the workout is four repeats on the outside of Torrey Pines. Then you will head North on the coast RIGHT on Carmel Valley Rd, LEFT on Portofino, LEFT on Mango Dr, LEFT on Del Mar Heights Rd, LEFT on the coast, climb Torrey Pines and then U-TURN at the top (Torrey Pines Science Park and back down to the State Park entrance. | Encinitas to Julian #6 Rated B+ 101 miles with 7700 feet of climbing From beautiful Encinitas to the quaint little town of Julian. There is plenty of climbing as you leave Encinitas at approx 250 elevation and ascend to Julian at 4220 feet elevation. Have lunch and apple pie and then it is basically "all downhill from here". How many times have you heard that before? Major highlights of the ride are Del Dios Hwy, Highland Valley Road, Old Julian Hwy, and the final seven mile relatively easy climb to Julian from Santa Ysabel. | Hill Workout #7 Escondido to Borrego 107 miles with 13,000 feet of Gain Lots and lots of climbing on this one. Park at North County Fair Mall and head East on S6 climb to Valley Center, climb Palomar South Grade, Climb Mesa Grande, Climb to Julian, climb Yaqui Pass, cut across the desert and then climb Montezuma Grade. |
| Hill Workout #8 Palomar Mountian 94 Miles with 16,000 feet of climbing Toughest century I know. Just do four repeats on Palomar Mountain starting at the "store" and going up to the top.
