| Once you have grown tired of climbing South and East Grade of Palomar try Nate Harrison Grade. It is definitely more challenging than the other two ascents. It is paved for about one mile and then the pavement gives way to a dirt road. It is very difficult on a road bike. Most people I told about my climb up "Nate" thought I was nuts for doing it on a road bike. One of your major challenges is traction. If you stand, the rear wheel slips-- if you sit your front wheel comes up off the ground. If you choose to climb "Nate" then I recommend the following: 1. Fresh Rubber-- I used a 25mm Specialized Armadillo on the rear. You will find that many times you are exposing your tire's sidewall to rocks that can't be avoided. Most of the climb you will be seated. Your front tire can be your normal road tire. 2. Easy Gearing-- I used a 53/39 with a 12/27 cassette. I found it to be still quite difficult. 3. Mountain Bike-- or at least a Cross bike. 4. Older Clothing- You will dismount many times and possible fall so don't wear your Sunday's best cycling gear Nate Harrison Grade Detail of "Nate" |
