If you want to get some good quality miles early in the season this is how you do it. You tell your significant other that you wish to do the Palm Springs Century with them-you know, it will be a great weekend getaway for the both of you. And then you tell them that you will ride to Palm Springs and back just to get the miles in. Total miles 340 and 20,000 feet of climbing. Not bad for a weekend. Day One- The ride out has some great climbing as soon as you leave town heading North and gradually East. El Camino Real, Palomar Airport Road then turn into Vista and work your way through rolling terrain to Hwy 76. Still traveling East you connect with Gird Road going North, Reche Rd, and Hwy 395 to Temecula. Then continue to head East on Hwy 79, to Hwy 371, to Hwy 74 and then drop into Palm Desert. Day Two- Do the Palm Springs Century as hard as or easy as you want. A well supported ride with a well marked course and police escort from time to time. Day Three- Return back to San Diego doing the route in reverse. The climb out of Palm Desert is another of the Epic Climbs in Southern California. It climbs for 15 miles and gains 3760 feet. It is a great climb with plenty of S's to keep you interested. Day One Ride to Palm Springs Day Two Palm Springs Century Day Three return from Palm Springs Hwy 74 Climb detail |
